Fall Family Photos & Outfit Tips

We’re finally in September, which means my favorite time of the year is just around the corner. I just love everything about Fall and even though we still have a few months of heat in San Diego, I like to embrace the season to the fullest! This means it’s time to eat and drink all things pumpkin, wear comfy sweaters, and plan family photos! I always opt to take family photos in the Fall–it’s so much easier to dress up for the season and you can add some updated photos to your home before the holidays. Since I take so many photos of the girls and do family shoots quite often, I always change out the photos on our walls. It’s nice to see something new and refreshing each season (even thought it drives Danny a bit crazy).

I recently did a photo shoot with the lovely Johanna from Studio Freyja and I was amazed with her work. She got the girls to giggle and captured the mos beautiful photos for us. She took her time and was so patient when the girls wouldn’t cooperate (hey, it happens).

Even thought I dress the girls in twinning outfits pretty much every day, I try to do a bit more of mix and match when it comes to family photos. Coordinating stlyes/patterns in different pieces is always my go-to and makes for the best photos. For our Fall shoot, I dressed the girls in Remie Girl’s Fall line. Ari wore a black leo with a printed skirt and Nati wore the same print in a dress. I wore a red dress to add some color to the photos. I love how the photos can be used for Fall photos in our home and I can even turn these into Christmas cards if I decide to!

If you’re unsure where to start when it comes to planning your family photos, think of a color palette that you like and that speaks to the season. I always like to focus on neutrals with one or two pops of colors to add to the photo. You’ll also want to consider where you’ll be shooting your photo to make sure your outfits don’t blend in with the scenery!

When prepping for a family session with little ones, you’ll also want to be sure your kids are in a good mood. Your hungry toddler is not going to smile for photos if she doesn’t have a full belly! I always bring snacks along, make sure the kids are fed and treat (sort-of bribe) them with their favorite desert or small toy after. After all, you want to capture your kids’ true personalities so letting them have fun with the session is the most important part!

If you are in the San Diego area and are looking for a photographer, check-out Studio Freyja and let Johanna know that Aly sent you!
