Does Instagram have you down? Read this.

If you’ve been struggling with your Instagram engagement, you are not alone. Instagram is changing again and it’s impacting the way our followers are engaging with our content. For bloggers who earn their income based on their Instagram content, this can be a really scary thing. However, there are so many other ways to create content and there could not be a better time to focus on building your social media presence across other platforms.

If you are new around here, you may not know that I’ve been writing about this topic for a while now. Life got busy, I took on some bigger projects and have put this aside, but it’s something I am passionate about something I’ve built my career out of. I have a Master’s in Integrated Marketing and a career in PR. Oh, and I’ve grown this little blog over the past couple of years ;).

Something I’ve been talking about for years is the importance of building your online presence across ALL social media platforms, if you want to get serious about blogging. Instagram is so appealing to those starting out- I mean a quick caption and a photo and boom, your done. Grow your following and get paid? Sounds almost too easy, right?  Sure, it is the easy route but it’s not the safest place to be in.

Social media platforms change daily.. Remember when it was all about Facebook? Or Twitter? Before we know, Instagram may be a thing of the past and we’ll be moving on to the next best thing. Stay active on social media and posting content across all these platforms helps establish your brand, consistency and authenticity. When one platform fails, it’s time to move on to the next.

While Instagram may be my “biggest” platform, I will always put the blog first. This is a space I truly own and I can share my content how I choose. I also make sure to stay active across my other channels as well. For example, I may have the “smallest” following on Pinterest, but my content still reaches over 100k a month and it brings in the most traffic to my site. Twitter gives me the most click-throughs with under 1,000 followers. Someone’s following may look “small” but one social site makes up just one part of someone’s brand.

You don’t need hundreds of thousands of followers on a single platform to have influence. If you think about it, everyone’s an influencer anyway. During this time of change, the main thing to focus on is having a consistent message across multiple platforms so that your content gets seen to the right audience.

Less focus on the numbers and more focus on that quality content!
